Mesmerising Marsaxlokk – your perfect autumn day out
Autumn brings with it the perfect opportunity to explore the most charming corners of Malta, with the mild weather making it possible to enjoy day-trips in the outdoors while basking in the temperate sunshine.
And few locations offer a prettier – or more diverse – day out than Marsaxlokk, the sleepy fishing village in the south that hides a surprising number of activities. With its calm waters bedecked with the traditional luzzu and its gorgeous church façade, this picturesque place has graced many picture postcards and it’s very easy to see why.
We recommend that you keep an entire day to take in the unique beauties of this village, as visitors come from far and wide to experience a traditional way of life that is very difficult to find in today’s fast world. Do start out early in order to catch the best of the fish and flea market that bedecks the entire promenade – Hotel Valentina will be happy to sort out transport for you. Alternatively there are frequent buses that will drop you off in the heart of the village.
Start your day with coffee at one of the cafés that dot the main piazza, prepared Maltese style of course, and maybe a snack to fuel your explorations. Afterwards, a leisurely saunter on the promenade reveals various market stalls –some selling the freshest fish and seafood brought in by the fishermen that very morning. Others provide the perfect opportunity for souvenir hunting, with their bric-a-brac and knickknacks. As you reach the furthest end of the flea market, do take some moments to sit down on the pier and enjoy the view of the Mediterranean Sea adorned by the colourful luzzu. How about a quick selfie with the traditional fishing boats in the background? Of course, any photographer will find plenty to keep them occupied here!
By now you will probably be hungry, which is perfect as Marsaxlokk is renowned for some of the best fish and seafood restaurants on the island! Michelin restaurants sit next to cheap and cheerful, homely eateries, the choice is yours! One thing is for sure your tastebuds will thank you for this, as each restaurant competes to provide the most flavoursome experience and innovative Mediterranean dishes. Bon appétit!
Do take your time to enjoy this part of the day, because if you enjoy exploring local dishes this is certainly the place to do it. Maybe finish off with some homemade liqueur too, such as our Bajtra (named for the local prickly pear that it is made from) or even the famed Maltese limoncello.
Finally, it’s time to leave the restaurant, but the day is not over yet. A short walk in the opposite direction to the market will reveal even more beauty. The vibe is quieter here, with families walking or picnicking on the front, enjoying the views across neighbouring Delimara. Walk far enough and you may even reach one of Malta’s most spectacular swimming spots – Kalanka.
A day out in Marsaxlokk is soothing to the soul, and will certainly provide one of the loveliest memories of our island. And should fancy strike you, the vibe in this village changes drastically at night, when the restaurant and drinks lounge scene takes on a more sophisticated edge!
