Don't miss out these 5 must-see places in Malta.

We understand – it can be very difficult to make sure you don’t miss out on the biggest highlights while on holiday. This is especially true in Malta, where there is so much to see that limiting your itinerary might look impossible. We’re here to help you avoid a bad case of FOMO by directing you to the absolute top 5 must-visit spots on the Maltese Islands.

  1. The Hypogeum
  2. The Blue Grotto
  3. The Three Cities & Valletta
  4. Mdina
  5. Comino

1. The Hypogeum

How does the idea of visiting a subterranean necropolis dating back to circa 3000BC sound. Intriguing? We thought so. The Hypogeum is believed to have contained the remains of over 7,000 people, as documented by archeologists – the remains are now housed at the Museum of Archeology. The Hypogeum is also one of the finest examples of prehistoric temples in Malta. Look out for the so-called Oracle Room, a resonance chamber designed to project chanting and drumming.
The only snag? It’s on the to-do list of every other traveller, and pre-booking is a must. You can book online here.

2. The Blue Grotto

Water so crystalline blue as to be almost transparent, the fish and fauna perfectly visible to the eye. This is how most visitors describe the sea around the Blue Grotto in Zurrieq, a web of sea-caves that are only accessible by boat. Luckily, you can easily rent a traditional luzzu from one of the fishermen in the area, who will be happy to take you out to the caves and to recount various interesting tales related to the area. Get your camera ready for this one!

3. The Three Cities & Valletta

Although each deserves a day on their own, if you’re strapped for time you can easily fit both in one day. Start your morning in Valletta, when it’s less busy and you will be able to enjoy the main landmarks in peace. Then make your way down to the Waterfront at Ta’ Liesse and catch the ferry to Vittoriosa, right opposite. Here, you can meander around the streets of the Three Cities, taking in the old way of life. In the evening, there are many excellent restaurants to choose from, the most popular being the ones overlooking the beautiful Marina creek.

4. Mdina

This mediaeval town, which ones used to be the country’s capital city, looks as though it belongs in a fairy tale, with narrow, cobbled streets that admit no cars, but only horse-drawn carriages. If you’re up for some museum-hopping, Palazzo Falson and the Cathedral are well-worth a visit. Of course, you can’t leave Mdina without an obligatory selfie taken on the bastions – here, you will literally have the entire island as backdrop. If you’re up for spending an evening in Malta’s ‘Silent City’, we will be happy to point you in the direction of some world-class restaurants.

5. Comino

If such a thing is even possible, the waters surrounding the tiny island of Comino are even more clear than those around Blue Grotto. The small stretch of water that straddles Comino and the even smaller Cominotto is called the Blue Lagoon, and a fitting name it is, too. A swim in these waters is a must; you can get there by boat from the Cirkewwa pier, just make sure you check what time the last boat to Malta leaves – it’s only too easy to lose track of time, surrounded by natural beauty.
